Riley’s Army is a volunteer-based organization in Greenville, North Carolina that started in the hospital room of a five-year-old girl named Riley. Riley Philpot was born June 15, 2000, to Kirk and Kelly Philpot and is the oldest of four children. Riley was diagnosed with Wilm's Tumor in May 2006 and strongly battled cancer six times in her life.
Both of Riley’s parents are physicians in Greenville, NC and she was always supported greatly by family and friends during her hospitalizations, relapses, remissions, and treatments. During one of her relapses, Riley had remarked that it must be hard for families who didn’t have the means and resources she had. She understood the difficulties and challenges other families faced because that’s who Riley was, so selfless, intuitive, and compassionate.
It was Riley’s dream that there would be support for other kids who were like her, fighting cancer. So by her words, an idea was born. Riley’s Army was formed in 2008 when we had “an army of volunteers” supporting Riley and other children, who are battling cancer. Riley passed away on May 25th, 2011 after a long and resilient fight. We will continuously spread awareness of childhood cancer and raise funds for these brave children and their families.
